Exoneree Robert DuBoise settles with City of Tampa
On Thursday, the Tampa City Council voted unanimously to approve a settlement with DuBoise for $14 million to resolve a pending federal lawsuit.
Robert DuBoise spent almost 37 years in Florida prison for a crime he did not commit. Three of those years were spent on Florida’s death row. (More background on DuBoise’s case can be found here.)
In 2023, as TFDP previously covered, Gov. DeSantis approved legislation compensating DuBoise $1.85 million for his wrongful incarceration. Read more at the link below:
On Thursday, DuBoise settled a federal lawsuit with the City of Tampa for $14 million. According to reporting by CNN, the “Tampa City Council unanimously voted” to approve the settlement.
During the meeting, according to CNN, council member Charlie Miranda commented on the effects of DuBoise’s wrongful conviction, saying:
“How would you feel if you were in jail for 14,600 days and every one of them damn days you knew you were innocent?”
According to CNN, the settlement money will be paid as follows:
The settlement will be paid over three years, with an initial payment of $9 million within thirty days of the settlement execution, followed by a $3 million installment next year and the final $2 million in 2026.
Within 10 days of the initial payment, DuBoise will file to dismiss the wrongful conviction lawsuit, the resolution adds.
For DuBoise there are 25 or more Florida DP prisonners innocent but without legal & circomstantial means to prove their innocence. So the the Florida Death Penalty is legal murder of the innocent, so often and premeditated murder always.
