Florida seeks death penalty after Biden commuted their sentences.
On Friday, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office announced they will reopen the case from 2006 with the intent to seek death sentences in state court against Daniel "Homer" Troya and Ricardo Sanchez.
In December 2024, at the end of his term, President Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 of the 40 federal death row prisoners. Two of the prisoners’ death sentences resulted from crimes that occurred in Florida in 2006. Daniel "Homer" Troya and Ricardo “Ricky” Sanchez, Jr., both 41, were sentenced to death for murders that occurred in St. Lucie County in 2006.
On Friday, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and State Attorney’s Office announced they will reopen the case with the intent to seek death sentences in state court against Troya and Sanchez. A press release posted to the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page says “[t]he State Attorney’s Office will . . . coordinate closely with law enforcement and surviving family members as the case progresses.”
A press conference will be held Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
This move is consistent with directions given by the Trump Administration shortly after Trump took the White House.
