JAMES WARRANT: Three petitions pending at SCOTUS ahead of execution tonight
Edward James' execution is now scheduled for tonight at 8:00 p.m. per information from the Florida Department of Corrections. As of this morning, James has three petitions pending at SCOTUS.
Edward James’ execution was originally scheduled for 6:00 p.m. tonight. As of last night, the execution was delayed to 8:00 p.m. The reason for the delay is unclear. (More on that here.) I emailed the Florida Department of Corrections yesterday asking for the reason for the delay and have not received any response.
As of this morning, James has three petitions pending at SCOTUS. In addition to the two petitions I previously covered here, James has another petition pending related to a decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit that was docketed on Tuesday (one day after the other two). The questions presented in that petition are:
All three petitions are fully briefed as of this morning. James’ Reply in support of the last-docketed petition was filed today. So far, no ruling is indicated on the docket for any of the petitions.
