Lake County: Julie Sulpizio determined incompetent to proceed
A Lake County trial court determined Julie Sulpizio is incompetent to proceed with trial and ordered her involuntarily committed.
In August 2024, Julie Sulpizio was arrested and charged with first-degree murder (and other charges) for the murder of Lake County Master Deputy Bradley Link.
On October 1, the State filed a Notice of Intent to Seek Death Penalty indicating it is seeking the death penalty against Sulpizio and listing five aggravating factors:
Throughout the fall of 2024, Sulpizio was examined by experts for purposes of determining her competency to stand trial. Experts submitted a written report to the court for consideration.
On February 28, 2025, the trial court entered a written Order Adjudging Defendant Incompetent to Proceed and Commitment to Department of Children and Families. The Order indicates that Sulpizio was diagnosed with psychotic spectrum disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorder. The Court found that Sulpizio is “in imminent danger of harm to herself or others and neglect of self-care.” Based on its findings, the Court ordered that Sulpizio be involuntarily committed for mental health treatment.
This cannot possibly be the whole story. What is the courts intention following the possibility of better Mental Health involving this defendant?
