New Florida law requires all DOC prisoners to submit DNA
Under the new law, all prisoners in the custody of the Department of Corrections must submit a DNA sample on or before September 30, 2024.
Late last month, Governor DeSantis signed into law new legislation that requires all prisoners in the custody of the Department of Corrections to submit a DNA sample on or before September 30, 2024.
The language of the bill, which became law immediately upon the Governor’s signature, is below:
The bill passed the House and the Senate unanimously.
The referenced statute (section 943.325) relates to the statewide DNA database. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, “[t]he Florida DNA Database averages over 4,500 DNA hits to unsolved crimes per year.” As of March 2024, the database had over 1,700,000 samples.
