Deceased: Anthony Lamarca
DOC records show that Anthony Lamarca died Saturday after over 20 years on Florida's death row.
According to Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) records, Florida death row prisoner Anthony Lamarca died Saturday, April 19, while in DOC custody after serving over 20 years on death row.
Lamarca was 69 years old at the time of his death. He was sentenced to death for crimes that occurred in Pinellas County in December 1995.
The cause of Lamarca’s death is unclear. State policy requires that an autopsy be performed for all deaths; however, those records would only be accessible through a public records request.
Background on Lamarca’s Sentence of Death
In November 1997, Lamarca was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of his son-in-law, Kevin Flynn. He represented himself in the penalty phase and waived the presentation of mitigating evidence. The jury recommended death by a vote of 11-1, and the trial court sentenced Lamarca to death.1 On direct appeal, in 2001, the Florida Supreme Court affirmed Lamarca’s sentence of death. His sentence became final in 2001.
Lamarca unsuccessfully sought postconviction relief. He also unsuccessfully sought federal habeas relief.
In 2018, the Florida Supreme Court denied Lamarca relief under Hurst because his sentence became final before Ring v. Arizona.2
Lamarca v. State, 931 So. 2d 838, 843 (Fla. 2006).
