Duane Owen: Updated warrant period
Governor DeSantis has updated the warrant period to fix the error in the original letter.
It’s been two days since Governor DeSantis issued the warrant for the execution of Duane Owen, scheduling the execution for June 15, 2023. (Read the background of Owen’s case here.)
As of last night, the Florida Supreme Court docket had not been updated to reflect any change related to the warrant period or execution date. (More here.) As of this afternoon, there is a new cover letter on the docket that reflects a new warrant period but keeps the execution date and time the same:
Interestingly, the letter has the same date as the original letter when the warrant was issued.
It is unclear when the letter was received by the Court or when the document was uploaded to the docket. Also, the letter is not uploaded as a new docket entry but, instead, as an additional document on the warrant entry.
I spoke with the Department of Corrections Communications office this morning and asked if they had received any clarification on the warrant period issue. They said they were going to check and get back to me. I have not heard back as of this posting.
I also tried calling Governor DeSantis’s office this morning but did not get through, and the mailbox was full.
