More on the Hurst resentencing proceedings
As a follow-up to Saturday's post, here's more information on all of the resentencing proceedings that were granted after Hurst v. Florida.
Over the weekend, I posted about the 57 Hurst resentencing proceedings that still remain pending across the State.1 Here is a bit more information about what Hurst meant for the people on Florida’s death row.
A total of 149 people were granted resentencing proceedings after Hurst, out of the approximately 400 people who were on Florida’s death row when Hurst was decided.
When Governor DeSantis signed the new capital sentencing legislation on April 20, 92 of those 149 resentencing proceedings had been completed—leaving 57 that remained pending when the legislation was signed.
The outcome of the 92 resentencing proceedings that had been completed when the new legislation was signed, which were conducted under Florida’s post-Hurst statute that required unanimity, was 71 people resentenced to life and 21 people resentenced to death.
