Edward Zakrzewski’s execution is set for July 31 at 6:00 p.m.
As TFDP previously covered, the circuit court denied Zakrzewski’s postconviction claims. Zakrzewski appealed the ruling to the Florida Supreme Court. As of Friday, Zakrzewski’s appeal is fully briefed.
In his brief, Zakrzewski, through his attorneys, raises four claims.
First, Zakrzewski argues that the circuit court erred in denying his claim that his death sentences are unconstitutional because the jury’s votes to recommend death would not substantiate a death sentence under today’s capital sentencing statute:
Second, Zakrzewski argues that the circuit court erred in denying his claim that the timing of his death warrant violates his constitutional right to access to counsel and to due process:
Third, Zakrzewski argues that the circuit court erred in denying his claim that the Governor signing his death warrant without a recent, updated clemency proceeding violated his constitutional rights:
Fourth, Zakrzewski argues that the circuit court wrongly denied his requests for public records:
Zakrzewski also filed a motion to stay his execution.
On Thursday, the State filed its Answer Brief. On Friday, Zakrzewski filed his Reply Brief, completing briefing on the appeal. The Court’s ruling is pending.
The filings can be found on the Court’s docket here.
TFDP Prior Coverage of Zakrzewski’s Case
My thoughts are with everyone involved in the warrant- and execution-related process.
Premeditated ceremonial political killing. Nothing less nothing more
Zakrzewski attacked his wife with a crowbar and machete and strangled her to death. He then killed his two children by beating and stabbing them. He's the kind of guy only a puritanical leftist with a savior complex could like.
