Nelson Serrano died today after being hospitalized for quite some time with a terminal condition. Serrano spent over 3 decades on Florida’s death row and was almost 86 years-old.
As TFDP previously covered, Serrano was awaiting a new penalty phase that was granted in 2017 after Hurst.1 He maintained his innocence throughout his time on death row.
DOC’s records have not yet been updated. His current location is listed as “Unknown” and he is still listed on the Death Row Roster. However, the document below, originally posted by Rob Dunham on Twitter this morning, indicates correspondence from DOC regarding Serrano’s death.
As a now-retired DP attorney in New Orleans around 1980-1990, now in CA, what a waste of resources and time. If it takes the Fla criminal review "system" THAT long to figure out how to achieve justice for someone, no wonder we are in trouble, both financially and morally. Quel dommage.
I am still unsure about the outcome of other cases in other states. But it appears taxpayers are paying for "l'etat, c'est moi" justice, resurrected in another form.
